9 Halloween Safety Tips
9 Halloween Safety Tips
1. Wear brightly colored costumes - dark costumes are difficult for motorist to see at night. If dark costumes must be worn, attach reflective tape to them.
2. Children should carry and use flashlights. Use reflective treat bags.
3. Wear masks that don’t block a child's vision or breathing. Cloth masks or entire head masks can slip and obscure a child’s vision. It’s fun to paint masks on children’s faces by using nontoxic makeup or grease paint.
4. Avoid loose-fitting costumes which can catch on fences, bushes or other obstacles. Be sure costumes are not so long that children trip on them.
5. Never allow children to trick or treat alone. Accompany your children on their rounds or make sure a responsible adult will be along. Be sure children travel only in familiar neighborhoods and that they don’t enter strangers homes.
6. Tell children not to eat any treat before it has been inspected by a parent. Dispose of any fruit homemade, unwrapped or poorly wrapped candy unless you know positively that it is safe. Always inspect candy for holes or other evidence that it may be tainted.
7. Review pedestrian safety with your children. Only cross streets at corners. Remind them to watch for traffic and other potential dangers before they go out.
8. When driving in a residential area on Halloween, motorist should slow down and take extra caution as children may dart out from parked cars or not look before crossing streets, children are often times dressed in dark costumes that are hard to see.
9. Illuminate your property so trick-or-treaters don’t trip and fall. Fences should be easy to see. Noisy children may disturb animals; it is best to keep pets inside to avoid possible incidents.
